Nourishing the Heart: A 5-Week Somatic Mindfulness Journey
In this five-week somatic mindfulness series, we will focus on cultivating positive emotional states to strengthen our inner reserves of hope and resilience.
Far from being merely pleasant experiences, positive emotions play an essential role in our overall wellbeing and our ability to navigate life's challenges. When we intentionally train ourselves to notice, savor, and absorb moments of positivity, we enhance our natural resilience and create lasting changes in our brain and nervous system.
“The brain takes its shape from what the mind rests upon. If you keep resting your mind on self-criticism, worries, grumbling about others, hurts, and stress, your brain will be shaped into greater reactivity, vulnerability to anxiety, and depressed mood. But if you keep resting your mind on noticing you're alright right now, seeing the good in yourself, letting go... your brain will gradually take the shape of calm strength, self-confidence, and inner peace.”
― Rick Hanson, Buddha's Brain: The Practical Neuroscience of Happiness, Love, and Wisdom
Each weekly gathering will open with a grounding somatic practice, setting the stage for an embodied exploration of that session's positive emotion.
Drawing on insights from traditional Buddhist teachings and modern neuroscience, we'll deepen our understanding of each emotional state through a 20-minute guided meditation and gentle relaxation practice. We'll conclude with reflective conversation and questions, supporting the integration of insights through community dialogue.
